There are these trees in our neighborhood with leaves so rich in color that every time I walk by I want to stop and savor them. And when I stop I am usually am reminded to pause internally and to take a deep breath. I took a cutting home as a reminder and have been savoring not only the color, but the elegant shapes as well.

This painting was made India ink, which is made from charcoal ash, and has become to me a tangible symbol of creating and finding beauty in our ashes. The gold hints at beauty in the form of healing that can break into spaces and places of pause.
